One of my favourite statues is the complex of Aphrodite, Pan and Eros. What sets this statue apart from most of the other Ancient Greek masterpieces is that it tells a funny little story. In this composition Aphrodite is trying to repel the sexual advances of Pan. Aphrodite, in a rather relaxed and playfull manner, is threatening to hit Pan with her sandal, while Eros is trying to help her. It never fails to put a smile on my face.
You can see it at the National Archeological Museum in Athens.Thursday, October 21, 2010
